Move your phone right up to a flower and, past a certain point, it simply won’t focus — the image goes soft. Every lens has a minimum focusing distance, and normal lenses still render the subject small at that limit. Macro photography is about going beyond that limit: seeing an insect’s hairs, a flower’s pollen, the reflection inside a water droplet larger than your naked eye ever could.
But “macro” is confusing because it’s used as a genre, a technique and a marketing label all at once. This guide starts from the technical definition, then covers the four real ways to get closer — and why the hard part of macro isn’t “getting close” but “keeping it sharp.”
The technical definition of macro: magnification ratio
Whether a photo is macro is decided not by the lens but by a single number: the magnification (reproduction) ratio — the ratio between the subject’s real size and the size of its image projected onto the sensor.
- 1:1 (life-size): The subject lands on the sensor at its real size. A 10 mm insect covers a 10 mm span on the sensor. This is the threshold of true macro.
- 1:2 (half life-size): The subject lands at half size. This is actually as far as most “macro modes” and kit lenses reach.
- 2:1 and beyond: The subject lands larger than life-size. This is “super macro,” and it needs specialised gear.
For a lens to be true macro it has to reach 1:1 magnification. Lenses stamped “Macro” that only reach 1:3 or 1:4 do close-up, not macro. The difference isn’t marketing — it’s physics.
There’s a sneaky detail here: magnification is relative to the sensor, not the frame. Put the same 1:1 lens on an APS-C body and the subject looks “bigger,” because the smaller sensor crops out the centre of the same image. Working distance: a separate choice from magnification
This is what beginners mix up most. Magnification is how big the subject appears. Working distance is the physical gap between the front of the lens and the subject. They are not the same thing.
You can get the same 1:1 magnification a few centimetres away with a 60 mm macro lens, a bit further with a 100 mm, and quite far with a 180 mm. The size in the image stays the same; the only thing that changes is the distance.
- Short macro (~60 mm): Cheap, small, light. But you have to get very close; the lens can shade the subject with its own shadow, and a skittish insect has already flown.
- Medium macro (~90–105 mm): The most popular balance. The sweet spot for unbothered subjects and flowers.
- Long macro (~150–180 mm): Expensive and heavy, but with generous working distance. Valuable for fleeing subjects like butterflies and dragonflies, and for getting light in front of the subject.

The four ways to get closer
You don’t strictly need an expensive macro lens to do macro. There are four ways to turn the lens you own into a magnifier, and each comes with a different trade-off.
1. Macro lens
A dedicated lens built for the job. It reaches 1:1 (some go further) and, because it also focuses to infinity, doubles as a portrait or landscape lens by day. The highest optical quality, the most convenient, and the most expensive route.
- Pro: True 1:1, sharp, autofocus and aperture work, all in one piece.
- Con: Price.
2. Extension tube
A hollow ring that mounts between lens and body. Moving the lens away from the sensor lets it focus closer, raising magnification. Roughly: added magnification ≈ tube length ÷ lens focal length. So the same tube adds a lot to a short lens and little to a long one.
- Pro: No glass inside, so optical quality doesn’t drop. Cheap.
- Con: You lose infinity focus (it only works up close). And because it pushes the lens forward, less light reaches the sensor; the exposure darkens and you compensate with shutter or ISO.
3. Close-up (diopter) filter
A magnifying element that screws onto the front of the lens like a filter. Its strength is measured in “diopters” (+2, +4, +10); the bigger the number, the more magnification.
- Pro: The cheapest and smallest solution, no light loss, takes up no room in the bag.
- Con: The extra glass can reduce sharpness and clarity, especially at the frame edges; on cheap single-element filters this is obvious. Two-element (achromatic) ones give cleaner results.
4. Reversing ring
With a cheap ring adapter you mount a normal lens backwards. Short focal-length lenses (28–50 mm) in particular give very high magnification when reversed — this is the cheapest route to “super macro.”
- Pro: Nearly free, very high magnification.
- Con: The electronic connection is broken; focus and usually aperture are set by hand, and working distance gets very short. A fully manual, patient method.
If you want to start macro on the cheap, the order is: first an extension tube set (no glass, no quality loss), then a reversing ring if you own a good 50 mm. Buy the close-up filter in an achromatic (two-element) version; a single cheap element can put you off macro entirely.
The real challenge of macro: keeping that millimetre sharp
Getting close is the easy part. The hard part is that as magnification rises, two things turn against you at once.
Depth of field shrinks to millimetres. At 1:1, even at f/8 the zone that stays sharp is only a few millimetres. An insect’s eye can be sharp while its wing is already blurred. This is the most extreme case of depth of field behaviour: of the four factors, magnification eats depth the fastest. But stopping all the way down isn’t the answer either. Past f/16, diffraction kicks in and the image starts to soften; in macro this limit arrives earlier than usual, because pushing the lens forward narrows the effective aperture. We explained how f-numbers affect sharpness in what is aperture.
Shake grows. Magnification enlarges not just the subject but the smallest tremor of your hand. The everyday “shutter ≈ 1/focal length” rule collapses in macro; the same shake travels much further across the frame. That’s why macro shooters use either a very fast shutter, a solid tripod, or flash to freeze the moment. In macro there’s no such thing as “a little blurry” — the plane is so thin that either the right plane is sharp or the frame is trash. Don’t leave focus to chance: on a tripod, focus by hand with the live view magnified; handheld, lock focus and rock the body forward and back to catch the right moment (like sliding on a rail).
Light: the scene that darkens as you close in
As you approach the subject two things happen: the lens shades the scene and the aperture you’ve stopped down soaks up light. That’s why light is half the technique in macro. A recipe to start
A practical start for your first macro attempt:
- Pick a still moment with no wind and a stationary subject: a flower, a coin, a watch face, a leaf vein. An insect is the advanced part — leave it for later.
- Use a tripod if you can. If not, set the shutter to at least 1/250.
- Set the aperture to f/8–f/11: enough for depth, still early for diffraction.
- Raise ISO until the exposure looks right; in macro, noise beats blur.
- Turn off autofocus. Focus by hand, or lock onto one plane and rock the body forward and back to catch the right moment.
- Put the sharp plane on the subject’s most important point — the eye on an insect, the stamen on a flower.
Common mistakes
- Mistaking “macro mode” for real macro: The flower icon in the menu doesn’t take the lens to 1:1; it just shoots at the minimum focusing distance. It gives close-up, not macro.
- Shooting everything at f/22: Chasing more depth, you soften the whole frame with diffraction. Win depth with focus stacking instead of f/22.
- Thinking of shutter like normal shooting: Shake grows with magnification; 1/125 that looks sharp handheld often isn’t enough in macro.
- Forgetting light: The scene darkens as you close in. Even a paper reflector transforms the result.
- Ignoring the wind: Outdoors the biggest enemy is wind; at millimetre depth, a swaying subject shifts focus. Wait for the still moment or steady the subject with a stick.
- Not caring about working distance: Chase a skittish insect with a short lens and it always escapes. That job needs a long macro lens or a lot of patience.
