What Is Depth of Field? The 4 Factors That Set Sharpness

In a photo you focus on a single point, yet some sharpness survives in front of and behind that point too. The length of this front-to-back zone that appears sharp is called depth of field. The creamy, melted background of a portrait and the front-rock-to-distant-mountain sharpness of a landscape are two ends of the same idea.
The key thing to understand: depth of field is not a setting. There’s no “depth of field” dial on your camera. It’s a result produced by four separate factors working together — and once you know all four, you can control exactly how much of the frame stays sharp.
Focus isn’t a single plane — it’s a range
Optically, a lens renders only one distance in perfect sharpness at a time. Every point in front of and behind that plane lands on the sensor as a tiny disc. As long as that disc stays small enough, our eye reads it as a “point” — that is, as sharp. In photography this is called the circle of confusion.
Depth of field is the range of distances over which those discs still count as sharp. Focus isn’t a line, it’s a band — and anything that changes the thickness of that band changes depth of field.
The practical takeaway: “sharp” isn’t absolute, it’s relative. The same frame may look sharp everywhere on a small phone screen, then look shallow once you print it wall-size and step close. The numbers in depth-of-field tables always assume a specific print size and viewing distance.
The four factors that set depth of field
1. Aperture
This is the best-known lever. Open the aperture (small f-number, e.g. f/1.8) and depth of field gets shallower; stop it down (large f-number, e.g. f/11) and it deepens.
- f/1.4 - f/2.8: shallow. Subject sharp, front and back melt quickly.
- f/5.6 - f/8: balanced. Most everyday shooting lives here.
- f/11 - f/16: deep. Front-to-back sharpness.

2. Subject distance
Often skipped, yet maybe the most powerful factor: the closer you get to your subject, the shallower depth of field becomes. With the same lens at the same aperture, the sharp zone on a flower shot from 50 cm is measured in millimetres, while on a person shot from 5 metres it grows to tens of centimetres.
Want a blurred background but don’t own a fast lens? Distance is your answer: get closer to the subject and move the subject away from the background. You can get clear separation without buying an expensive f/1.2 lens.
3. Focal length
At the same distance and same aperture, a long focal length (telephoto) makes depth of field shallower, while a wide angle deepens it. A portrait shot at 85mm melts the background far faster; at a 24mm wide angle almost everything stays sharp. We cover how focal length affects framing and perspective in the focal length guide.
There’s a famous subtlety here: if you change focal length but step back or forward to keep the subject the same size in the frame, depth of field at the subject stays nearly constant. A long lens’s “shallower” feel mostly comes from magnifying the background and making the blur more obvious. So the “telephoto = shallow” rule holds when distance is fixed.
4. Sensor size
At the same framing and same aperture, a large sensor (full frame) gives shallower depth of field than a small one (APS-C, MFT, phone). That’s because capturing the same frame with a bigger sensor requires either a longer lens or a closer distance — so factors two and three come into play. Why is the sharp zone short in front and long behind?
Depth of field isn’t spread symmetrically around the focus point. Roughly one third sits in front of the subject and two thirds behind it. So when you focus on someone, the area behind them stays sharp over a wider band than the area in front.
This asymmetry matters in two situations especially. In a group portrait, arranging people so the front person sits slightly back — rather than in a single flat row — makes it easier to fit everyone into the sharp band. In landscapes the extreme version of this logic kicks in: by placing focus not at infinity but slightly nearer — at the hyperfocal distance — you spread sharpness across both the foreground and the horizon. At close distances this ratio shifts, and the sharp zone approaches a near-symmetric front/back split. That’s why the rule works differently in macro.
If you want shallow depth of field
If your goal is to separate the subject from the background and get creamy bokeh, turn all four factors the same way:
- Open the aperture (f/1.8 - f/2.8).
- Get closer to the subject.
- Use a longer focal length (50-135mm).
- Move the subject as far from the background as possible.

If you want deep depth of field
For landscapes, architecture and group shots that need front-to-back sharpness, reverse the logic: stop down (f/8 - f/11), use a wide angle, and step away from the subject.
But “the more I stop down the better” is a trap. At f/16 and beyond, diffraction sets in and softens the whole frame — you pay back the depth you gained in sharpness. For most landscapes f/8-f/11 is the sweet spot. We cover this balance in depth in landscape sharpness.
Seeing depth of field before you shoot
In the viewfinder or live view everything usually shows at the widest aperture, so you can’t see the “real” sharp zone in the frame. Two practical ways around it:
- Depth-of-field preview button: found on many bodies, it stops the aperture down to the shooting value and shows the sharp zone as it will be. The image darkens, but you see the real zone of focus.
- Magnify in live view: after locking focus, zoom to 100% on critical points and confirm they’re actually sharp — especially in shallow shots, one eye sharp while the other drifts is common.
Common mistakes
- Managing depth of field with aperture alone: distance and focal length are part of the equation too. Sometimes taking a step back beats stopping down.
- Shooting every portrait at f/1.4: depth of field is so shallow that one eye can be sharp while the other blurs. For most faces f/2.8 is safer.
- Reflexively stopping down to f/22 for landscapes: diffraction eats sharpness; f/8-f/11 gives enough depth for nearly every scene.
- Being sad your phone doesn’t look shallow: that’s small-sensor physics; you can reclaim some separation with distance (get closer to the subject, push the background back).
- Checking sharpness only on a small on-screen preview: everything looks sharp small. On critical frames, always magnify and look.
