Hyperfocal Distance: Front-to-Back Sharpness in Landscapes

The classic landscape dilemma goes like this: there’s an interesting rock or flower in the foreground, mountains in the back, and you want both sharp. Focus on the foreground and the horizon goes soft; focus on the horizon and the foreground blurs. Hyperfocal distance is the answer to exactly this problem: a technique for spreading depth of field across the whole frame by placing focus at one precise point. We touched on it briefly in our landscape sharpness guide; here we dig into the math and the field practice.

Definition: the closest focus point that still saves infinity

Remember

The hyperfocal distance is the closest distance you can focus at while keeping infinity acceptably sharp. When you focus there, the zone of sharpness runs from half the hyperfocal distance all the way to infinity. So if the hyperfocal distance is 3 meters, everything from 1.5 meters to the horizon is sharp.

No deeper zone of focus is physically possible at that aperture and focal length — which is why this is the single most valuable number in landscape photography.

The formula: where does the number come from?

Hyperfocal distance depends on three things:

H = f² / (N × c) + f

  • f: focal length (mm)
  • N: aperture value (f-number)
  • c: circle of confusion — the acceptable blur size, conventionally ≈0.03mm for full frame and ≈0.02mm for APS-C

The formula matches intuition: focal length enters squared (wide-angle lenses pull the hyperfocal point dramatically closer), and stopping down brings it closer too. This is the extreme end of the depth-of-field logic from our aperture guide: stretching the zone of sharpness as deep as it will go, across the entire frame.

Three examples worth memorizing

You don’t need to compute the formula in the field; typical landscape combinations look like this (full frame, c=0.03mm):

  • 16mm @ f/11: H ≈ 0.8m → sharp from 40 centimeters to infinity. At ultra-wide focal lengths the hyperfocal point is so close that almost everything is almost always sharp.
  • 24mm @ f/8: H ≈ 2.4m → sharp from 1.2 meters to infinity. The most classic landscape combination.
  • 35mm @ f/11: H ≈ 3.7m → sharp from 1.85 meters to infinity. As focal length grows, the hyperfocal point recedes fast; at 85mm it’s tens of meters away and the technique loses its practicality.

On an APS-C body the smaller circle of confusion pushes the hyperfocal point somewhat farther for the same lens and aperture; add roughly 50 percent, or install a free calculator like PhotoPills or HyperFocal Pro.

How to apply it in the field

  1. Compose the frame and pick your aperture (typically f/8-f/11 for landscapes).
  2. Look up the hyperfocal distance in a calculator, or use the memorized values above.
  3. Lock focus on an object at that distance — verify by magnifying in live view. On modern mirrorless bodies the distance scale in the viewfinder works too.
  4. Once focus is locked, shoot without recomposing; focus-and-recompose can shift the distance.
Tip

The common “focus a third of the way into the scene” tip is a rough approximation of hyperfocal focusing — it usually works, but it misleads when your foreground is very close. When a frame matters, use the real number.

Two warnings: diffraction and the word “acceptable”

First: it’s tempting to stop way down to pull the hyperfocal point closer, but at f/16 and beyond diffraction starts softening the whole frame — as we explained in detail in the landscape sharpness guide, most lenses have their sweet spot around f/8. Gain depth with a wider focal length when you can, not with the aperture.

Second: “acceptably sharp” is a relative term. The c=0.03mm standard is defined for a normal-size print viewed at a normal distance. Zoom to 100% on screen and the mountain at infinity will look a touch softer than it would with focus placed directly on it. For frames where the horizon must be critically sharp (say, a seascape shot with a long exposure), focusing directly on the far plane — and blending in a second frame focused on the foreground (focus stacking) — is the more reliable route.
