The moment you half-press the shutter, the camera makes a decision: “the correct exposure for this scene is X.” The mechanism behind that decision is the light meter — and in A, S and P modes it sets your shutter or aperture, while in M + Auto ISO it drives the ISO. But where in the scene does the camera look to decide? That is exactly what the metering mode selects — and a reading taken in the wrong mode will sabotage even perfectly chosen settings.

How the meter thinks: the 18% grey assumption

First, the fundamentals: your camera’s meter recognizes neither colours nor subjects; it reads reflected light and assumes every scene averages out to middle grey (18% reflectance). In most everyday scenes that assumption holds. But if a scene is naturally bright (snow, a white wall), the camera darkens it toward grey; if it’s naturally dark (night, a black backdrop), the camera brightens it toward grey. Matrix / Evaluative metering: the smart default

Nikon calls it Matrix, Canon Evaluative, Sony Multi. The frame is divided into dozens (on some bodies, thousands) of zones, each zone is measured separately, and the camera compares the data against a scene database to produce a balanced exposure. Modern matrix metering also factors in your focus point and face detection.

Let’s be honest: it is the right answer for 90% of your shots. Landscape, street, everyday documentary, family — if light is distributed evenly across the frame, don’t stray from matrix.

Just as with camera modes, the goal is matching the tool to the scene, not picking whichever looks most “professional.”

Center-weighted metering: old school, predictable

Center-weighted metering reads the whole frame but gives most weight to a large central circle; the edges barely influence the result. What separates it from matrix is that it doesn’t try to be clever — and some photographers love it precisely for that: its behaviour is predictable, with no scene-to-scene surprises.

Its classic use case is a subject in the middle of the frame that is clearly brighter or darker than the background: a portrait against a window, a single performer on stage. Where matrix might get distracted by the background, center-weighted stays loyal to the subject.

Spot metering: needlepoint precision

Spot metering reads only a tiny 1-5% area of the frame (on most bodies it follows the active focus point). Everything else can be pitch black or blown white — the camera doesn’t care: the point you chose gets exposed correctly.

Spot shines in scenes where the light contrast is extreme:

  • Backlit portraits: Spot-meter off the face and the face is exposed correctly while the sky blows out — exactly the deliberate trade we make in backlit portraits.
  • Moon photography: A bright moon in a black sky fools matrix metering every time; in moon photography spot is practically mandatory.
  • Concerts and stage light: You meter the performer in the spotlight, and the dark hall can’t corrupt the reading.
Watch out

There is a price: spot is unforgiving. Put the point in the wrong place (dark hair instead of the face) and the exposure swings completely. Using spot means knowing what you are treating as a midtone.

Which scene, which mode — a quick guide

  • Evenly lit general shooting (landscape, street, everyday) → Matrix
  • Single centred subject against a different-brightness background → Center-weighted
  • Backlight, stage light, the Moon, high contrast → Spot
  • Unsure → Matrix + check the result on the histogram

Metering alone isn’t enough: pair it with compensation and the histogram

The metering mode answers “where should the camera look”; how far to shift the camera’s verdict is the job of exposure compensation. The two work as a pair: matrix metering on a snowy scene plus +1 to +2 EV to keep the snow white is a typical combination. And the most reliable way to verify the result is not the screen’s brightness but the histogram — the screen lies, the data doesn’t. One more anchor: in sunlight, the fastest sanity check on the meter’s verdict is the Sunny 16 rule, which reads exposure from the light source itself — if the meter sits two stops from the rule, the one that’s wrong is probably the meter.

Common mistakes

  • Leaving spot on and forgetting it: The spot mode you enabled for yesterday’s concert will fling today’s landscape exposures around at random. Make checking the metering mode part of your start-of-shoot routine.
  • Placing the spot on the wrong tone: Spot pulls whatever it reads toward middle grey. Meter off a white wedding dress and the dress comes out grey — you’ll need compensation to fix it.
  • Trusting matrix blindly: Matrix is very good but not magic; snow, night and backlight still get pulled toward grey. Check your results in extreme light.
