Exposure Compensation (EV): When to Overrule Your Camera's Meter

You shot a snowy landscape but the snow came out dirty grey. Or at sunset your subject’s face went pitch black. The camera isn’t broken — it simply exposed “correctly” by its own logic, and that logic fails systematically in certain scenes. Exposure compensation is the button that lets you say, at exactly that moment, “no, your reading is wrong for this scene.” It usually carries a +/− symbol and it’s the single most practical button in photography.
Why the camera fails: the middle-grey story
Your camera’s meter tries to pull every scene toward middle grey (about 18% grey). This rests on the assumption that “an average scene is of average brightness,” and most of the time it works. But when the scene isn’t average, the reading collapses:
- Snow, beach, white wall (dominant light tone): The camera thinks “too bright” and cuts exposure, turning snow grey. Fix: +1 / +2 compensation.
- Night, black background, dark clothing (dominant dark tone): The camera thinks “too dark” and lifts exposure, turning blacks grey and adding noise. Fix: −1 / −2 compensation.
The rule is simple: white scene → plus, black scene → minus. It sounds backwards at first, but the logic is to undo the camera’s tendency to drag everything to grey.
It speaks the language of the stop
Exposure compensation doesn’t invent a new unit; it works through the stop, the common currency of the exposure triangle. +1 EV brightens the frame one stop (doubles the light); −1 EV darkens one stop. Most cameras adjust in 1/3-stop steps (+0.3, +0.7, +1.0…), so you can make fine touches.
Which setting absorbs the compensation depends on the mode:
- A / Av mode: You fixed the aperture, the camera absorbs compensation with the shutter.
- S / Tv mode: You fixed the shutter, the camera absorbs it with the aperture.
- M + Auto ISO: The camera absorbs it with ISO.
- Full manual (M, fixed ISO): Exposure compensation has no effect — because you’re already setting all three. In manual you shift the meter scale directly instead.

Which compensation where — practical values
- Snowy landscape, sunny beach: +1 to +2. Keep the snow white.
- Backlit portrait (sun behind the subject): +1 to +2. Don’t leave the face in shadow — field use in backlit portraits.
- Foggy, overcast flat scenes: +0.3 to +1. Cleans up greyish whites.
- Night scene, concert, dark background: −1 to −2. Keep blacks black and noise down.
- A lone subject under a spotlight: around −1. Don’t let the camera compensate for the surrounding dark and blow out the subject.
These are starting points; for the exact call, look at the histogram, not the result on screen.
The histogram: compensation’s true compass
The brightness on the screen can mislead depending on the screen’s own brightness. The real measure is the histogram: after dialling compensation, make sure you haven’t pushed the right edge into clipping, and that in a snowy scene the graph leans right. “Expose to the right” (ETTR) is exactly this — exposing as brightly as possible without losing information.

Don’t forget to reset it
The sneakiest thing about exposure compensation: the value you set stays until you reset it. Dial +2 for a snowy scene, then walk into a dim café, and every frame blows out by two stops. Resetting compensation to zero at the end of each session is a solid habit — most lost frames come from forgotten compensation.
Common mistakes
- Reversing the direction: Dialling minus in a snowy scene sinks the snow even greyer. White scene → plus, black scene → minus.
- Trusting the screen brightness: The screen looks dark in sun and bright in the dark. The decision belongs to the histogram.
- Looking for compensation in full manual: In M with fixed ISO the +/− button does nothing on most bodies; shift the scale indicator directly.
- Forgetting to reset: Blowing out every following frame with the previous scene’s +2 is the most common mistake.
- Compensating every scene: In average-toned scenes (green forest, mixed city) the meter is already right; compensation is only needed when the scene is dominantly light or dark.
