RAW vs JPEG: Which Format Should You Shoot?

It may be the single most important choice in your camera’s menu: RAW or JPEG? Online, the question has turned almost religious (“real photographers shoot RAW!”), but the truth is calmer: they are two tools designed for different jobs. Understand the difference and the choice makes itself.
What each format actually records
RAW is the raw data read off the sensor — unprocessed, losslessly (or near-losslessly) compressed, with white balance and contrast decisions not yet made: a digital negative. The file isn’t directly usable; it has to pass through an editing program.
JPEG is the finished photograph the camera produces by processing that raw data for you: white balance applied, contrast and sharpening added, the data compressed down. The file written to the card is instantly shareable — but the processing decisions are irreversibly “baked in.”
The most honest summary: RAW reserves the decisions; JPEG lets the camera make them.
RAW’s real advantages
- Recovery headroom: A RAW file hides up to 2-3 stops of data in the shadows and highlights that you can’t see on screen. Bringing back a blown sky or lifting a dark face is often possible. - White balance after the fact: In RAW, white balance isn’t burned into the file, only noted. A frame shot in mixed light can be shifted to any temperature later — every decision from the white balance guide can be made at home, with a calm head.
- Tonal depth: JPEG stores 8 bits per channel (256 tones); RAW stores 12-14 bits (4,096-16,384 tones). In smooth gradients like skies, aggressive editing causes banding in JPEG but not in RAW.
Where JPEG is the right call
Thinking of JPEG as the “beginner format” is a big mistake — there are places where professional workflows choose it deliberately:
- Speed and burst shooting: RAW files are 3-5x larger; they fill the camera’s buffer and the card much faster. With JPEG the camera sustains long bursts far longer — check whether your card keeps up in the memory card guide. In sports photography that difference can decide whether you catch or miss the frame.
- Instant delivery: If you need to shoot at an event and share within minutes, JPEG being a “finished file” is an advantage.
- Archive size: On a trip with thousands of frames, RAW seriously inflates card and disk costs.
The middle road: RAW + JPEG together
Most cameras can record every frame in both formats at once. The cost is card space and some buffer speed; the payoff is keeping both doors open: share the JPEG immediately, process the critical frames from RAW later. For weddings, travel and anything that demands both speed and insurance, it’s a very common setup.
Decision guide
- Landscape, portraits, low light, difficult light → RAW (recovery headroom and colour flexibility are critical)
- Sports, wildlife, long bursts → JPEG, or RAW with a fast card
- Events + instant sharing → RAW+JPEG or JPEG

Common mistakes
- Shooting RAW and never editing: An unprocessed RAW looks flatter than the camera’s JPEG (contrast and sharpening haven’t been added yet). If you shoot RAW, learning a basic editing workflow is part of the deal — otherwise shooting JPEG is the more honest choice.
- Believing “RAW rescues every mistake”: RAW headroom is wide but not infinite; a sky blown by 3 stops contains no data. No format replaces good exposure habits.
- No card and disk plan: Most people who switch to RAW meet the full-card-and-backup problem within a month. Do the size math up front.
- Heavy editing on JPEG: Push an 8-bit file hard and banding and breakup are inevitable. If you’re planning aggressive edits, the decision belongs at the moment of capture: RAW.
