Panning Technique: The Opposite of Freezing Motion

In our freezing motion in sports photography guide, we covered stopping motion with a fast shutter speed. Panning is the exact opposite: you pick a slow shutter speed and swing the camera at the same angular speed as your subject, keeping the subject sharp while the background streaks into horizontal blur. The result carries far more sense of speed than a frozen frame — but getting consistent results takes understanding the physics behind it.

Why it works: relative motion

Remember

If the camera stays still and you shoot a moving subject at a slow shutter speed, both subject and background blur. But if you swing the camera at the same angular speed as the subject, the subject stays nearly stationary relative to the sensor (its relative velocity approaches zero) — it stays sharp, while the background, now moving relative to the camera, streaks into lines.

This is an extension of the shutter-speed logic from our exposure triangle guide: shutter speed still decides “freeze or blur” — you’re just shifting the reference point to the subject.

The right shutter speed range: it depends on the subject

There’s no fixed number — it’s found through trial and depends on subject and distance, but these are solid starting points:

  • Walking person: 1/30 - 1/60
  • Running person, cyclist: 1/60 - 1/125
  • Car, motorcycle: 1/125 - 1/250
  • Race car, train: 1/250 and above (panning still works even at high speed, because what actually matters is angular velocity, not raw speed)

Angular velocity: the hardest angle is straight across

How “fast” a subject appears depends not just on its actual speed but on its angle relative to the camera. A subject passing directly in front of the camera (90°) has the highest angular velocity — hardest to track, and requires an even slower shutter speed since the camera has to swing quickly. A subject approaching or moving away at an angle shows much lower angular velocity; the panning effect is less pronounced at these angles but easier to track. That’s why the best starting point for beginners is a frame where the subject approaches at roughly a 30-45 degree angle.

Technique: feet planted, body rotates

  1. Position your feet ahead of time so the subject will cross the center of the frame at the moment you want to shoot — like a golf swing, where you set up around the point of impact.
  2. Pick up the subject in the viewfinder/screen and start tracking by rotating from the waist, keeping your feet planted.
  3. Switch to AF-C (continuous autofocus), covered in our focus modes guide — focus distance keeps changing as the subject approaches, and single-shot AF-S won’t keep up.
  4. Press the shutter when the subject is centered, and keep swinging through the shot (follow-through) — stopping the moment you press the shutter is the single most common panning mistake, and it leaves the background only half-blurred.
  5. Shoot in burst mode across multiple frames; panning has a high failure rate — expect 1-2 keepers out of every 10 frames.

If you’re using a tripod, choose a head that frees only the horizontal axis (a pan-tilt head with the vertical locked); the gimbal heads we mention in our tripod buying guide also work well here — ball heads struggle to keep horizontal movement smooth.

The midday slow-shutter problem

Choosing a slow shutter speed like 1/60 in bright midday sun usually forces the aperture down to f/16-f/22 — which costs sharpness to diffraction and gives you far more depth of field than you want (less background blur). This is where an ND filter, covered in our ND and polarizing filter guide — often just 2-3 stops is enough — lets you hold aperture at a reasonable value (around f/8) while still dropping shutter speed.

Lens stabilization: panning mode

Watch out

Some lenses (Nikon’s “Sport VR,” Canon’s “Mode 2”) offer a dedicated panning mode: it cancels vertical shake but doesn’t fight your horizontal sweep. In standard stabilization mode, the lens may mistake your intentional horizontal motion for shake and try to correct it — if there’s no panning mode, turning stabilization off entirely usually gives more consistent results.

Common mistakes

  • Stopping the moment you press the shutter: Cutting the follow-through leaves half the background sharp and breaks the effect. Keep swinging a moment after the shot too.
  • Setting the shutter speed too slow: The subject blurs too and the frame becomes unusable. Work down gradually (1/125, then 1/60, then 1/30) to find the range that matches your skill.
  • Using AF-S: Single-shot focus can’t keep up with an approaching subject; AF-C is required.
  • Starting with the hardest angle — subject crossing straight across: Practice with subjects approaching at an angle first; angular velocity is lower and more forgiving.
  • Leaving standard stabilization on: Turn it off if there’s no dedicated panning mode — standard stabilization can fight your intentional pan.
