Light Pollution and Dark Skies: The Bortle Scale and Finding a Site

Everyone new to night photography thinks in the same order: first a faster lens, then a cleaner sensor, then maybe a star tracker. Yet the darkness of the location matters more than all three combined. A frame shot with an f/4 kit lens in a Bortle 4 valley beats one shot at f/1.4 on the edge of town almost every time — because in the first case most of the light gathered comes from the sky, and in the second it comes from street lamps.
This article is the practical answer to the “where should I go” question: how to read the scale, how to interpret the map, how far it’s actually worth driving, and what you can still shoot when you stay close to town.
The Bortle scale: what 1 to 9 means
The scale John Bortle proposed in 2001 classifies sky darkness from 1 (pristine dark) to 9 (inner city). What matters to a photographer isn’t the class number but what’s possible in that class:
- Bortle 1–2 — Pristine and truly dark. The Milky Way is bright enough to cast shadows on the ground; zodiacal light is visible to the naked eye. Found only in remote high plateaus and desert interiors. Here a single frame shows you the limits of your equipment.
- Bortle 3 — Rural sky. There’s a faint patch of light along part of the horizon, but overhead the sky is deep. This is the realistic target for serious astro landscape; what most photographers call “a good night.”
- Bortle 4 — Rural/suburban transition. This is the real threshold. The Milky Way is visible and — crucially — its dusty structure and dark lanes register in a photograph. If you can reach Bortle 4, the door to night photography is open.
- Bortle 5 — Suburban. The Milky Way is weak, washed out, and noticeable only overhead. It shows up in a photo, but you’ll fight it in editing; colours get muddy and shadows won’t open up.
- Bortle 6–7 — Suburban/urban transition. The Milky Way is effectively gone. In a long exposure the sky becomes an orange-grey curtain.
- Bortle 8–9 — City. Only the moon, the planets, and a handful of the brightest stars. There’s no such thing as a deep sky here.
Each step on the scale means roughly twice the sky brightness. So dropping from Bortle 6 to 4 cuts your sky background to a quarter — no equipment upgrade will ever give you that much.
Reading a light pollution map
Light pollution maps (free tools like Light Pollution Map and Dark Site Finder) work with colour layers built from satellite data: white and red are the most polluted, green and blue are middling, grey and black the darkest. They’re easy to use — but three subtleties get missed, and they can undo the site you picked:
- What matters is the dome in your horizon direction, not the colour overhead. City light reflects into the sky as a dome and brightens that side of the horizon from even 50–100 km away. If you’re shooting the Milky Way core — which in summer faces south — and there’s a metropolis 80 km to your south, your frame will be dirty even though the map shows your spot dark. The right question is: “What’s in the horizon direction that will be in the frame?”
- The map looks flat; terrain doesn’t. If there’s a hill between you and the city, that hill physically cuts the dome. The north slope of a valley is visibly cleaner than a flat field of the same Bortle class. Look at the topography; sometimes a well-chosen fifteen-minute reposition wins you as much as a two-hour drive.
- Data ages, light grows. Some maps run on satellite data several years old, and settlements have got brighter with the LED conversion. Once you’ve seen a site with your own eyes, keep your own notes on it.
The practical approach: pick a candidate on the map, then switch to satellite view and check whether you can drive in, whether there’s somewhere to park, and whether the horizon is clear. Scouting in the dark is the most reliable way to spend the first two hours of the night looking for a spot.
The moon: the only light pollution you can predict
While wrestling with city light, most people overlook the biggest light source of all. A full moon lifts the sky to roughly Bortle 7 levels — even in the darkest valley. The reverse is also true, and that’s where the opportunity is: the lunar calendar is known in advance.
- New moon ± 5 days: the real window for Milky Way and meteor work. Nights when the moon never rises, or sets early.
- First/last quarter: the moon is up for half the night. Check its rise and set times — half the night is still usable.
- Full moon: a loss for deep sky, a gain for landscape. Moonlight is a free light source that illuminates a foreground naturally and softly; it’s also your only chance to photograph the moon itself.
So when planning a night, the order is: lunar calendar first, then the weather, and the driving distance last. Years when a fixed-date event like the Perseids coincides with the new moon are opportunities that come around only every few years.
How far do you actually need to go?
The honest answer: it depends on the size of the city, but it’s less than people assume.
- From a mid-sized city (200,000–500,000): 40–60 km in the right direction usually gets you to Bortle 4.
- From a large city (1 million+): the same result needs 80–120 km, and escaping the dome entirely is hard; often the best available move is to put the dome behind you.
- From a major metropolis: getting down to Bortle 3 means 150 km and up — that’s a camping decision, not a there-and-back night.
Don’t think about distance alone: direction matters more than distance. A spot 40 km west of the city can be cleaner than one 70 km east — because the difference is what sits on the southern horizon where the summer Milky Way appears. Pick a few candidates on the map and compare them by direction.
And there’s a truth nobody mentions: a two-hour drive added to a sleepless night makes the journey home dangerous. Finding a close, moderately dark site and going regularly is both safer and more productive than one very long trip a month — because the better you know a place, the better you use it.
Variables other than darkness
Bortle isn’t everything. The same spot, at the same moon phase, can be two completely different nights:
- Transparency: dust, humidity and thin cloud in the atmosphere scatter starlight. The first clear night after rain is usually among the most transparent of the year.
- Altitude: as you climb you leave part of the atmosphere, and much of the humidity, below you. Above 1,500 m the difference is visible.
- Humidity and dew: high humidity both lowers transparency and fogs your lens. Don’t go out for the second half of the night without a lens heater.
- Season: the bright core of the Milky Way is visible in the northern hemisphere roughly from April to September; winter nights are darker and more transparent but have no core. Change your target for winter — the Orion region, constellations, star trails.
What can you shoot from Bortle 6?
If you can’t get far out, night photography isn’t over; the subject just changes. Plenty of good work comes out of the city and its edges:
- The moon. Completely unaffected by light pollution. It’s a bright subject and it’s shot from town.
- Star trails. Yes, long accumulated frames accumulate the sky background too — but the trails of bright stars come through from the suburbs, and you can make that orange horizon part of the composition.
- Conjunctions and planets. Venus, Jupiter and Saturn are easily visible from the city; pairing one with an architectural silhouette at twilight produces one of the most-loved kinds of night frame.
- The light itself. Night street photography treats light pollution as material rather than a problem. The same lamps on the same evening turn into an advantage when you change the subject.
- Twilight windows. In the last fifteen minutes of blue hour, the sky is still coloured while the bright stars start to appear; this window works even in the city.
In the field: courtesy and safety
A dark sky is a shared resource, and there are usually other people sharing it.
Don’t turn on a white light. Full dark adaptation of the human eye takes 20–30 minutes, and a single white flashlight resets it in a second — yours and everyone’s around you. Use a red flashlight, put your phone in night red mode, and turn your headlights off before entering the area.
- See the site beforehand. Visiting once in daylight fundamentally changes both safety and the quality of your framing.
- Permission and property. Ask before entering fields, pasture or private land; letting someone in the village know beats explaining yourself in the middle of the night.
- Don’t go alone, and share your location. You’re about to spend four hours in a valley with no phone signal. Someone knowing where you are is the minimum.
- Leave no trace when you go. This is the dark-sky community’s one real rule.
Common mistakes
- Reading the colour where you’re standing. What counts is what’s in the horizon direction you’ll shoot. The same site isn’t equally good for a north-facing star trail frame and a south-facing Milky Way frame.
- Skipping the lunar calendar. Driving two hours and arriving at a full moon is the most deflating experience in night photography. Calendar first, road second.
- Assuming further is always better. Fatigue and the drive home are real costs; a familiar site in moderate darkness usually produces more frames than an unfamiliar one far away.
- Trying to fix light pollution in editing. Filters and gradients that suppress the sky background help up to a point; but they can’t bring back detail that was never recorded. A dirty sky is a location problem, not an editing one.
- Solving the darkness and skipping the basics. Even at Bortle 2, a frame is rubbish if focus is off, and the sky comes out empty if the settings are wrong. Darkness doesn’t replace technique — it rewards it.
A dark sky is the one ingredient in night photography you can’t buy; you can only travel to it. But the good part is that once you’ve found the right place, that place stays with you: you return to the same valley season after season, you memorise its horizon, you know what rises where in which month. The real accumulation in night photography isn’t in the gear — it collects in that notebook.
